Illustrative day in Küsnacht: Standup Paddling near Zurich

Arrival with the Stand-Up Paddle Boards at Lake Zurich in Küsnacht.

The arrival with the SUP boards at Lake Zurich in Küsnacht for stand-up paddling was already promising. We took the train from Zurich HB to the train station in Küsnacht. From here, it's just a few meters walk to the beautiful beach in Küsnacht. The bathing area offers a large lawn, a clean beach, and crystal-clear water. Upon arrival, we enjoy the view and started to look for the optimal spot near the water to set up the SUPs. There are many options, and we quickly choose the first row - right by the water. Here, you have direct access to Lake Zurich, plenty of space to set up the stand-up paddlesand the perfect spot for entry and exit into the water. Küsnacht provides the perfect destination for a day trip with the rented stand-up paddle boards.

Setting up the rented SUP Boards

Once we've found the optimal spot, it's time to set up the stand-up paddles. Setting up the SUP boards takes about 15 minutes and is very simple and self-explanatory, even if you've never done it before. First, we unpack everything and roll out the board visibly on the ground. Then, we start by inflating air chamber 1 followed by air chamber 2. We use the "Inflate" opening of the double-action pump and set the pump to level 2, making inflation twice as fast and providing a good endurance workout. Next, we quickly attach the fin to the rented SUP. Setting up the SUP board requires no tools, and all the necessary parts are included in the backpack. However, we still provide you with a few tips beforehand for assistance. Additionally, each SUP backpack comes with a small instruction manual for setup and breakdown. This ensures that your SUP experience in and around Zurich is a complete success!

Stand-Up Paddling on Lake Zurich

After successfully setting up the boards on the beach in Küsnacht, we head straight onto the water with the stand-up paddles. We enjoy the sunny day on Lake Zurich to the fullest. There's plenty to explore along the shore, such as beautiful lakeside villas, boat docks, and green shores. Occasionally, a boat or passenger ship passes by. On one side, you can see the city of Zurich, while on the other side, you have a good view of the Alps. It's almost difficult to decide whether to sunbathe and enjoy the view or go stand-up paddling. In the end, we decide to do both and spend several hours on the SUP boards. The panorama was uniquely beautiful in both cases. The water was clean and clear, and the photos were perfect for an Instagram post

Dismantling of the boards in Küsnacht and return to Zurich by train

After spending several hours with great moments on the lake, we slowly make our way back to the entry point. Upon arriving at the beach, the first thing we do is remove the fin and let the SUP boards, rented in Zurich, dry in the sun for about 10-15 minutes. The actual dismantling after drying should not take longer than approximately 15 minutes for beginners. First, we release the air from the two chambers of the SUP. Then, we pump out the remaining air from the boards using the "Deflate" pump setting until all air remnants are removed, and the SUP boards become completely flat. This allows us to easily roll up the boards and store them perfectly in the backpack. After everything is packed up nicely, we return to Zurich by train, reflecting on the day's adventures.

11 Tips for Stand-Up Paddling on Swiss Lakes near Zurich

  1. Entry and exit: There are many spots on Lake Zurich where you can engage in stand-up paddling. Some of the most popular places include Zurichhorn and Tiefenbrunnen on the east side, or Rentenwiese and Landiwiese on the west side. However, be mindful that the water is not too busy to minimize safety risks.
  2. Start slow: If you don't have much experience, start slowly and get used to paddling. Begin with small rounds to improve your balance and technique.
  3. Use the right equipment: For stand-up paddling in Zurich, you'll need a board, a paddle, and possibly a life jacket. You can rent the equipment from us.
  4. Mind your posture: Good posture is crucial for stand-up paddling. Make sure you stand upright, distribute your weight evenly on both feet, and keep your knees slightly bent. Keep your eyes forward and not on the board or paddle.
  5. Be cautious: Avoid getting too close to other water sports enthusiasts or boats. Also, be careful when near currents or winds to avoid drifting or falling into the water.
  6. Safety equipment: It is advisable or mandatory to wear a life jacket when stand-up paddling on running waters and when you are 300m or more away from the shore. Additionally, it is recommended to carry a paddle with you. If possible, also bring a mobile phone to call for help in case of an emergency.
  7. Weather conditions: It's important to keep an eye on the weather conditions before setting out with the SUP. Strong winds can make paddling difficult and even dangerous.
  8. Maritime traffic: On large lakes such as Lake Zurich or Lake Lucerne, there is maritime traffic. Therefore, always be attentive and ensure you maintain a sufficient distance from other boats.
  9. Physical fitness: Stand-up paddling requires a certain level of physical fitness and endurance. Make sure you are able to handle the distance you plan to paddle. To save energy and avoid unnecessary risks, always paddle close to the shore. Watch out for maritime traffic and do not enter into shipping lanes.
  10. Environment: Avoid paddling near animals, plants, or protected shores to avoid disturbing or endangering them. Also, avoid littering and ensure you leave the lake clean.
  11. Have fun: Stand-up paddling is a great way to enjoy Lake Zurich or other lakes and rivers around Zurich and the beautiful scenery while getting some exercise. So, don't forget to enjoy the moment and relax!

Legal requirements in Switzerland

When engaging in stand-up paddle (SUP) activities on lakes in Switzerland, if you venture further than 300 meters from the shore into the outer shoreline zone, you must carry a properly sized life jacket, with a minimum of 50 Newtons upthrust per person. This requirement also applies when navigating rivers. During nighttime or poor visibility conditions, SUP boards must be illuminated with a highly visible white all-around light.

SUP boards fall under the category of paddle boats under Swiss Navigation Regulations, making them a subgroup of rowing boats and hence classified as competition-capable water sports equipment. They are exempt from the marking obligation but must prominently display the name and address of the owner or holder.
